The word ballistic, in essence, denotes the motion of projectiles in flight. More commonly, the term conveys a material’s resistance capability to bullets or other projectiles. The UL752 Standard for Bullet-Resisting Equipment is the premier benchmark in the assessment of bullet-resistant materials. Within this foundational construction standard, UL752 delineates 10 levels of bullet resistance, with levels 1 to 3 primarily engineered to intercept three-shot clusters discharged from typical handguns. Levels 4 through 8 will intercept shots from high powered firearms, such as an Uzi or an AR-10 Assault Rifle. A door falls under the purview of the UL752 framework as its composition includes ballistic materials.

In the fall of 2021, a client approached us with an extraordinary request to create an eccentric, slightly rustic wooden pivot door featuring a glass insert by renowned artist Martina Huson. Grateful for the opportunity to craft such a unique door unit, we jumped on the endeavor.

Pivot doors are an interesting shift from traditional doors and have revolutionized contemporary design. Rather than conventional hinges, these doors are hung on a set of pins allowing the doors to appear as if they're floating in the opening. In contemporary architecture, the pivot door is quickly becoming a symbol of innovation and sophistication, providing a unique perspective on door design.

Martina Huson is a stained-glass artist based in West Virginia, known for her fantastic work in the field. Over the years, her superb stained-glass artistry has been admired and acquired by many, and our client had the privilege of obtaining one of her creations before the artist's retirement. Huson's glass piece was an integral part of our featured hardwood custom door. Designed with meticulous attention to detail, the door features the stained-glass insert as well as a thick, dark chocolate exterior crafted from sapele mahogany. Normally, we use larger pieces of hardwood for these special door applications, and this unit was no exception. Once completed, the door became a fantastic representation of our custom door versatility. The door's dimensions and choice of materials demonstrate our ability to create bespoke woodworking solutions.

How To Inspect and Maintain Your Wood Doors and Windows

A Clean Home is a Happy Home!

A t least every 6 months, you should take the time to inspect your doors and windows from the outside of your home. For example, washing and waxing a car is a standard part of automobile ownership. Similarly, nothing receives more abuse than your home’s doors and windows. After all, many people trade their automobile in every 18 to 36 months, but they may plan on living in their home for 15 to 20 years. Don’t assume the exterior of your home can be neglected .

Cleaning the exterior of your home’s windows and doors is every bit as easy as washing your car (assuming you do not always take your car through a car wash; however, if you need tips on washing your car, we can give you those as well). Alas, your home won’t fit into a carwash. So, to begin, get a bucket and clean water. Next, using an automobile or car wash detergent, follow the directions as though you are washing a big car. A truck brush is handy because it has a telescoping handle with soft synthetic bristles. Washing your window or door one by one, hose each down with a garden hose. Do not use a pressure washer as this can damage finishes and other parts of your home. Do not worry if a bit of water leaks in the window or door, because this process is a great way to reveal a cavity. Anywhere water is leaking, more air is leaking. Consider these leaks an opportunity to prepare your home for harsh weather.

After fully rinsing your door or window, give it a good cleaning with a sponge or truck brush and immediately rinse the soap away. I must emphasize, THIS is the important part of examining the finish of your wood door. When rinsing the door, the water should bead and run quickly down the door, leaving a dry finish above the water beads. If the water drags down the door and just hangs onto the wood, your finish has ultra violet damage and needs a new top coat. If you see blackened areas in the wood, typically at the bottom of the door, you likely let your finish go too long. Regardless, if your finish shows wear, lightly sand and apply a new top coat to your door. These tips apply to a painted door as well.

Drying your windows and doors will minimize spotting. You can use a soft, dry terry cloth bath towel. Next, our favorite method involves grabbing your leaf blower to blow dry each door and window after you wash the opening. Blow drying forces water, gook and hidden bugs out of the crevices. Additionally, this procedure helps to spot areas of disrepair, which might require maintenance.

If you have aluminum-clad exterior windows, treat those windows as you would your car when it gets a dull finish. Use a high quality polish, which will bring your aluminum back to life. Never use a rubbing compound or abrasive car wax because these compounds will remove finish from your aluminum cladding. Your goal is to help the finish, not advance the aging.

Do not be afraid to clean your home’s exterior, and do not be afraid of getting a little water in your home. After all, you want to know where your home’s weaknesses are in order to repair them. Too many people go to sell their home, and through the findings of a buyer’s home inspector, discover many costly issues needing repair. Don’t risk deterring prospective home buyers. Be a good detective! Know your home’s weaknesses and correct them.

After all, a clean home is a happy home!

Architects, builders and homebuyers alike realize first impressions make a difference. So, installing a distinctive entrance door made from oak, mahogany or walnut hardwood may be the easiest and most cost effective way to boost your home's curb appeal. A more attractive front entrance is likely to increase the perceived value of any home. Wood adds warmth and beauty and will provide years of outstanding protection from the elements with just a little bit of simple maintenance. You can feel the difference.

Wood Species Selection

All woods are not created equal, and it is important when selecting a wood species for an exterior entrance door that you understand some of the characteristics of wood. The most common way to categorize wood is under the general headings of hardwoods and softwoods. Examples of hardwoods are oaks, mahogany, maples, cherry and walnut. Examples of softwoods are pines, firs and cedars.

Hardwoods, like oak, mahogany and South American walnut, are excellent for exterior door applications. Oak generally is pale yellow to mid-brown in color with a medium to fine wood-grain texture. Moreover, it is very durable and extremely resistant. Mahogany is red to brown in color with fine wood-grain texture, is very durable, very resistant and, because of its fine texture, is suitable for painting. South American walnut is a wood that is naturally distressed, very dense, light to medium in color, very durable and has a unique textural quality. Mahogany and South American walnut are becoming more and more popular as a choice over oak. The cost of mahogany is often less expensive but has a perceived higher value.

Wood comes from a living tree, and while it is more sensitive to the elements than metal, it is far more beautiful. It will change and grow in character over its life. With modest attention and care, a wood door can last for many years and add tremendous value to your home.

Drafty hollow core door between attic and living space

We received this situation from Jarrod. This is quite a common and frustrating issue!

I’m looking for two custom insulated door to replace the ones I have currently as shown in the picture the current door is an interior door cut with a saw to fit by the previous owner. Both doors I’m looking to replace go into the eve of the house for storage. I am losing a lot of heat and cooling with the current doors that are in place and the current doors are starting to split because of the difference in temperature on either side. The dimensions of the door are 23 3/4 inches wide 63 3/4 inches long and 1 3/8 inch thick. Any help you could offer with this I would be greatly appreciated thank you for your time.

While we could certainly provide Jarrod we a new weather-stripped door for his issue, that would be costly for him as the build of the door would be no different from any other entry door we produce. Below is our economical suggestion.

Jarrod, there is not good solution for your situation. The best bet is to attached a 1” foam board to the attic side of the door which you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes. You can custom fit to the inside of the door door then attach the foam board with gorilla glue. While unsightly, only the squirrels and rodents that might visit your attic will see the ugly side of your door.

You can also purchase perimeter nail on or adhesive applied weather strip to apply to the jamb of the door. Lastly , you can get a door sweep to attached to the bottom of the doors to minimize any drafting under the door. All told, you might spend a $100.00 on this project, but it will give you significant insulation and not be visible from your living space.

We have been using Sikkens ProLuxe finish for our exterior doors for the past two years. It is a tough and durable finish to say the least. Great for standing up against harsh weather elements. If a client decides they would like a color that is not in our wheel house we will turn to Sherwin Williams.

Clients simply mail us a color sample then we have SW match it using a piece of our wood. By using a Sikkens clear coat over the stain match we arrive at a finished product that looks great for years to come.

6 Easy Steps to Find Your Rough Opening, Frame/Slab Size, and Jamb Depth

Measure twice, even three times

Here are a few easy steps:

1. If you are looking to find the rough opening see steps 2 & 3. If you have an existing frame/slab see steps 4 & 5. If you're looking to find the jamb depth see step 6.

2. First, grab your tape measure. For the rough opening start by measuring the daylight opening width from the inside face of the stud wall or masonry opening to the other side. It is best to measure points in the opening near the top, middle, and bottom recording the smallest number of the three to account for anything out of square in the opening.

3. Next, to get the rough opening height use the same idea and measure the inside face of the stud wall or masonry opening from the top to the bottom of the sub-floor or concrete. Again, record the smallest measurement. Record the width from the previous step and the height from this step and you now have the rough opening size. (width x height)

4. For an opening with an existing door unit, first remove any interior casing or trim from the top and sides to expose the door frame from the wall. From the inside of the home looking outward measure the outermost edge of the frame from one side to the outermost edge of the frame on the other side and record the width of the frame. To measure the slab - hook your tape measure to the edge of one side and measure across the face of the door to the other edge of the other side and record your width. To get the thickness measure the front edge on a side to the back edge on the same side and record the thickness.

5. Next, to get the frame height measure from the top outermost edge of the frame to the bottom edge of the sill for an exterior door. Most interior door units are sill-less in which case measure from the top outermost edge of the frame to the floor. Record the width from the previous step and the height from this step and you now have the frame size. To get the slab height - hook your tape measure to the top edge and measure down the face of the door to the bottom edge. Record the slab width from the previous step and the slab height from this step and you now have the slab size. (width x height) Note: When ordering a door unit from millworkforless.com we still need a rough opening to ensure that when we build the door unit using our standard specs it will have the best tolerances in the rough opening.

6. To determine the jamb depth that your frame should be measure the thickness of the wall construction which most often times will encompasses several things (drywall, stud wall, block, brick, stucco, stone...). The frame depth can be less than the overall wall construction or more depending on the look that you desire. Be sure to determine if you would like the frame to be flush with the thickness of the wall or offsetting when ordering your door unit.

Tips:

For a home framed with 2x4s the standard jamb depth is 4-9/16". For a home framed with 2x6s the standard jamb depth is 6-9/16".
For a radius top door unit let us know the radius of the header if possible. If not, record the peak height, two leg heights, and width of the rough opening so we can determine a correct radius to fit the opening.
